Desert Tortoise – Anticipation

While photographing Desert Tortoise in California’s Mojave Desert, I caught this slow-paced reptile in a moment of anticipation as it was about to grab a bite of wildflower cuisine. For several months from Spring to Summer, I spent days in the early and late hours crawling around on my stomach, at tortoise-ground-level, recording the creatures’ life style. By the time Summer’s heat rolled around, the Spring forage of flowers and grasses had gone over and the tortoises became less active, spending much of the time inside the coolness of their underground dens. A remarkable creature well-adapted to the desert environment.
