Red Crossbill – The Boxy Bird With The Bodaciously Built Beak

The Boxy Bird With The Bodaciously Built Beak

The boxy bird with the bodaciously built beak doesn’t really have a malady at all.  The Red Crossbill, and its outrageously designed mandibles, is perfectly normal.  The frisky finch’s freakish-looking mouth is actually an adaptation used to pry seeds from pine cones.  So, what at first looks like a badly acquired mutation is really a handy tool for gaining a meal!  Caught this one recently in our backyard.
