Glaucous Gull and Black-legged Kittiwake – Assault

Glaucous Gull and Black-legged Kittiwake

This is a two-part story, the first installment appearing today: Assault We were cruising in the zodiac when a large Glaucous Gull attacked a much smaller juvenile Black-legged Kittiwake overhead in midair. The action came without warning and was as fast as it was frenzied making photographic acquisition of the action, framing and tracking it challenging, especially from the moving boat. Mortally injured, the Kittiwake plummeted to the water’s surface where the Glaucous Gull followed in vicious pursuit seizing its prey and dragging it to shore. Once there, the predator continued its assault until the murder was consummated. What happened next was as stunning as what had just occurred. Svalbard Reindeer – A Gentle Sparring Moment

Svalbard Reindeer

A Gentle Sparring Moment Softly swirl did the airy flakes of snow as the amply-antlered bull Svalbard Reindeer casually approached a nearby member of the herd. What he instigated next was a gentle sparring moment. It was not a “battle royal” for social position. That had already come to fruition. Instead, the perpetrator simply was exerting and reinforcing his dominance. ~ Anecdote and Svalbard Reindeer capture, A Gentle Sparring Moment © Jerry L. Ferrara, Spitsbergen, Norway.

Crossing The River of Fire The setting was ablaze with the stain of autumn and in the still of a vividly-hued morn a White-tailed Deer doe herd magically materialized on the marge of a muted, meandering waterway. Their appearance was steeped in ghostly silence as they pregnantly paused streamside. Intrepidly, the deer stepped into the richly-tinged flow. Sweep the Boreal Aurora Sky While the background for this shot may be reminiscent of those eerie, shadowy curtains of charged particles from the sun [the aurora borealis], it is in reality not the dramatic celestial light show at all but a reflection of the nearby forest on the lake’s glassy surface. ~ Anecdote and Bald Eagle capture, Sweep the Boreal Aurora Sky © Jerry L.
